Claude for Google Workspace is Anthropic's add-on that puts Claude in a sidebar inside Google Sheets, Docs and Slides. It reads the file you have open and edits it in place, so you stop copy-pasting your work into a chat window.
Anthropic opened the public beta on 6 October 2026, and its Help Center lists the Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise plans. You install it once from the Google Workspace Marketplace, and that covers all three apps. By default, Claude asks before each edit, so you approve every change.
Below is what it does in each app, who can use it, how to install it, and every link from the video.
What does Claude do in Google Sheets, Docs and Slides?
Claude for Google Workspace works in three apps, and in each one it edits the file you have open.
Sheets: write formulas and clean up messy data
In Sheets, Claude writes and fixes formulas, builds spreadsheet models and cleans up messy data, like a column of dates in three different formats. Anthropic's launch post also lists pivot tables, native Sheets charts and new tabs. Select the range you care about first, so Claude knows where to look.
Docs: rewrite and restructure long documents
In Docs, Claude rewrites and restructures long documents. Ask it to lead a summary with the recommendation, cut a long brief down, or turn rough notes into a table. For bigger rewrites, it can propose changes as cards you accept or dismiss one at a time.
Slides: create new slides and restyle the ones you have
In Slides, Claude creates new slides from your deck's own layouts and themes, so they match the rest of the deck. It can also tighten and restyle slides you already have, and it can check its own work for elements that overlap or run off the slide.
Approvals: you decide how much Claude asks first
The mode selector at the bottom of the sidebar has two settings. In "Ask before edits", the default, Claude explains what it's about to do and waits for you to click Allow. In "Accept all edits", it makes ordinary content edits without stopping, but it still asks before it adds a link, inserts an image from a web address or changes someone's access to the file.
Edits are made as you and show up in version history, so you can undo them.
How do you install and use Claude for Google Workspace?
You install it once from the Google Workspace Marketplace, then open it from the Extensions menu in any Docs, Sheets or Slides file. If your organisation already allows Marketplace apps, Anthropic says it takes about two minutes.
1. Check you can install it
You need a Claude account on the Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan, plus a Google account that's allowed to install Marketplace apps. Use Chrome, Edge or Safari, because Firefox isn't supported in the beta. The beta is still changing, so check the Help Center for the current plan list.
If the install button is greyed out, or you see "This application is not allowed by your administrator", your Google Workspace admin has to allowlist Claude or install it for you. That block comes from Google, not Claude.
2. Install it and open the sidebar
Open the Claude listing in the Google Workspace Marketplace, click Install, choose the Google account you use for Docs, Sheets and Slides, and allow the two permissions Google shows you. Reload any files you already have open.
Then open a file and go to Extensions > Claude > Open Claude. Sign in with your Claude account in the sidebar. One install covers all three apps.
3. Give it one job, then approve it
Open your messiest file, select what you want changed, and describe the outcome you want. Anthropic's own examples include normalising a column of dates in Sheets, rewriting an executive summary in Docs, and splitting a wall-of-text slide in two while keeping the deck's styling.
Claude only sees the file you have open, plus any connectors you turn on, so paste in anything that lives somewhere else. Keep the sidebar open while it works, because closing it stops the task. A single long operation can run for up to six minutes before Google stops it, so ask for big jobs in stages.
One more beta limit: charts Claude adds to Slides are images, so they don't update when your numbers change.
