5 Claude Keyboard Shortcuts for Mac You're Probably Not Using

Resources

The five Claude shortcuts worth learning on a Mac are the up arrow, Command N, Command D, a double-tap of the Option key, and Command 1 to 5. Between them you can resend a prompt without retyping it, start a new chat in one keystroke, talk instead of type, open Claude on top of any app you're in, and jump straight back into a recent chat.

The Option double-tap is the favourite from the video. It's called quick entry, it's part of the Claude desktop app, and Anthropic says it works on every plan, free included.

All five were tested on a Mac. Below is what each shortcut does, how to set up quick entry and dictation, and the official links.

What does each Claude shortcut do?

Up arrow: resend a prompt without retyping it

In the same chat, the up and down arrows step through your earlier prompts. Bring one back, change a word, and resend it. You skip the retyping.

Command N: start a new chat in one keystroke

Command N starts a new session. You don't need to click anything, so a fresh chat is always one press away.

Command D: dictate instead of typing

Command D is dictation. You talk and your words land in Claude, so you don't need a third-party dictation app. It needs a quick setup step, covered below.

Double-tap Option: open Claude over any app

Tap the Option key twice and Claude opens on top of whatever app you're in, so you never leave your work. Anthropic calls it quick entry, and its help page says it works on Mac for every plan, free included.

From that small window, Command N starts a new chat, and a screenshot you take drops straight into the conversation.

Command 1 to 5: jump back into a recent chat

Once quick entry is open, Command 1 to 5 jumps to one of your last five chats. You pick up where you left off in one keystroke, without leaving the app you're in.

How do you set up Claude's Mac shortcuts?

1. Install the Claude desktop app and leave it running

Quick entry needs the Claude desktop app on your Mac, installed and running. It can sit in the background with no window open.

Anthropic's help page says quick entry needs macOS 12 or later, and dictation needs macOS 14 or later.

2. Turn on quick entry

The first time you open the updated app, it asks whether to turn on the quick entry shortcut. Tick Turn on shortcut, click Continue, then double-tap Option to test it.

You can change this later in Settings > General, under Desktop app. If double-tap Option clashes with another app, the same setting lets you switch to Option + Space or set your own shortcut.

macOS will also ask for permissions. Screen recording lets Claude take screenshots and share a window, accessibility is needed for quick entry itself, and speech recognition is needed for dictation. You can review all three in System Settings > Privacy & Security.

3. Switch on dictation and check which key it uses

Dictation is off by default. Tick Turn on shortcut when the app offers it, and in the video, Command D starts it.

The key can differ between app versions, and Anthropic's help page gives Caps Lock. If Command D does nothing, open Settings > General, check the Voice shortcut setting, and use the key it shows.

4. Keep the list handy

Up / Down arrow step through your earlier prompts in the same chat
Command N start a new session
Command D dictation (see step 3 if it doesn't work)
Option, Option open Claude over any app (quick entry)
Command N from quick entry, start a new chat
Command 1 to 5 from quick entry, open one of your last five chats
